The early purple orchid can grow in woodland or grassland. Stature relects soil quality. Sometimes with butterfly orchids. Sometimes (in grassland) with green veined orchids. Not many seed pods seem to set. Blooms early May. One image shows a presumed hybrid with a green veined orchid. Smells of cats. A dead fragment introduced into compost propagated the smell of cats.
