Platanthera Bifolia : The Lesser Butterfly Orchid


Alkaline territory. Usually grassy places, a little more delicate and open than the greater butterfly orchid. Tips creamy yellow vs greenish on the greater. Also the nectories (rear horns) thinner and without end thickening. The lesser butterfly orchid has (unambiguously) smaller and closely spaced pollina as compared to the widely spaced pollina of the greater. The forward facing blooms on both blooms shows pollina 'clubs' pointing out of page. Closely spaced. Blooms late May. These Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, UK.
