EPIPACTIS HELLEBORINE : The Broad Leaved Helleborine
|
A long lived orchid of the Cotswold woods. Lots near Cheltenham,
Gloucestershire, UK. Requires neutral to alkaline soils. Possibly a monocot
in name only. It has 120 degree leafing habit in mature plants. The
earliest green leaf seedling observed by me has three small equally spaced
leaves. Spotted on several occasions. And once two sets of three such. It
could have been year 1 or year 2 though. Can produce large hansome plants.
Likes edge of wood situations. And attracts lots of wasps, and others. Very
nectiferous.
This plant observed at the end of its season - late September. They make large flower spikes and set lots of seed. Given partial sun that is. |
