OPHRYS SPHEGODES : The Early Spider Orchid

A denizen of poor alkaline coastal grassland. Typically Purbeck Limestone. These were near the West Dorset coast, UK. This is the northern edge of its range and the British population is somewhat dwarfed in stature compared with the more southerly continentals. Ground was squelchy. Thin layer of mud on rocky ground. Very short grass. Lots of cowslips elsewhere where the ground was drier. Bloomed in the last week in April. One flower opens and sets at a time. Standard nectar & bee arrangement. Dorset population 300+ apparently. Some in Kent allegedly. Also just starting nearby Green Winged and Early Purple orchids.
